The Texas government has installed a third barbed wire barrier along the Río Bravo (also known as the Río Grande) on the México border, despite criticism from the Mexican government and the risks to migrants.
Activists have said these measures by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, are “inhumane” and harm the most vulnerable, injuring those who dare to cross and driving others to seek more dangerous routes where they are at the mercy of organized crime.
Pastor Francisco González, director of the We Are One for Juárez (Somos Uno por Juárez) shelter network, said it is “unfortunate” that the United States allows these barriers, which have injured hundreds of migrants and caused several deaths.
“We have WhatsApp groups for spiritual support (for migrants). Some continue to connect to ask for prayer and tell us about the dangers they face and what is happening to them, so we have an approximate number of those who have been injured,” said the pastor, who coordinates 12 shelters for migrants.
Tensions between México and Texas have increased since July 2023, when Abbott installed barbed wire and a buoy fence on the Río Bravo.
Texas has defied the federal government and Supreme Court orders, as well as diplomatic requests from México, to remove the barrier, which has contributed to migrant deaths such as the drowning of a Mexican woman and her two children in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, on Jan. 14.
“Now that (Texas has) put up a triple barbed wire fence, it is more complicated, more dangerous, but that will not stop (the migrants) from trying to get there. We know it won’t, given the complicated circ*mstances they are experiencing in their countries; they will keep trying until they succeed,” said Pastor González.
The pastor pointed out that this “opens the door for people involved in human trafficking, the so-called coyotes, to do their business.”
Juan Carlos López, the spokesperson for the Diocese of Ciudad Juárez, stated that the U.S. must stop viewing migrants as a problem, as they are human beings seeking solutions to their needs.
“The life of migrants is already risky as they leave their country, culture and family. There is loneliness. This is a final obstacle,” said the church spokesman in Juárez.
He agreed that these barriers “do not discourage migrants from trying, they do not dissuade them, just make it more difficult.”

El Gobierno de Texas instaló una tercera barrera de alambre de navajas en el río Bravo (o Grande), en la frontera con México, pese a las críticas del Gobierno mexicano y los riesgos para migrantes.
Activistas señalaron que estas medidas del gobernador de Texas, el republicano Greg Abbott, son “inhumanas” y atentan contra los más vulnerables, como los niños, además de herir a quienes se atreven a cruzar la alambrada y orillar a otros a buscar caminos más peligrosos donde quedan a merced de la delincuencia organizada.
El pastor Francisco González, director de la Red de Albergues Somos Uno por Juárez, indicó que “es muy lamentable” que Estados Unidos permita estas barreras que han heridos a cientos de migrantes y han provocado la muerte de varios.
“Tenemos grupos de WhatsApp para ayudar espiritualmente (a migrantes), algunos siguen conectando para pedir una oración y son quienes nos comentan, de repente, que les sucedió tal cosa y que sí estuvo más peligroso y por eso tenemos ese dato de heridos”, indicó el religioso, quien coordina 12 albergues que reciben a migrantes.
Los choques entre México y Texas crecen desde que en julio de 2023, cuando el gobernador Abbott instaló los alambres de navajas y un cerco de boyas en el fronterizo río Bravo, algo que el presidente mexicano, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, tachó de “inhumano” y atribuyó a las elecciones presidenciales de Estados Unidos de 2024.
Texas ha desafiado órdenes del Gobierno de Estados Unidos y de la Suprema Corte, así como los reclamos diplomáticos de México, para quitar el cerco, que ha contribuido a las muertes de migrantes, como ocurrió el pasado 14 de enero con una mexicana y sus dos hijos que se ahogaron en Piedras Negras, Coahuila.
“Ahora que han puesto ya triple alambrada es más complicado, es más riesgoso y eso no va a detener que ellos desistan de ir para allá, sabemos que no va a ser así, por lo complicado que está en sus países, van a seguir intentando (hasta) lograrlo”, comentó el pastor González.
El religioso indicó que esto “abre la puerta esto para que la gente que se dedica al tráfico de personas, los mentados coyotes, hagan su agosto (negocio)“.
Juan Carlos López Morales, vocero de la Diócesis de Ciudad Juárez, expresó que Estados Unidos debe dejar de ver a los migrantes como un problema, pues son seres humanos que buscan una solución a sus necesidades, a sus carencias y a la violencia.
“De por sí, ya la migración es arriesgada, salir del país, la cultura, la soledad, la familia, la delincuencia, esto es un obstáculo final”, dijo el vocero de la iglesia en Juárez.
Coincidió en que estas barreras “no desaniman al migrante para hacer su esfuerzo, no los desalienta, simplemente les complica”.
